Yesterday I was delighted when Jasmine came home with a “Kindness Certificate”. As I’ve written about previously, Jasmine has been working really hard on social skills – specifically focussing on greetings, eye contact, tone of voice and how to behave in social situations.
It’s particularly difficult for neuro- diverse kids like Jasmine, as fundamentally they cannot identify in themselves a lack of social skills, they cannot ” hear” their tone of voice and indeed don’t really pickup on social cues let alone understand them. They just have to “rote learn” the expected behaviour and put it into practice.
I’m delighted that there is evidence she is really starting to do this especially without me there to prompt her. In fact I am absolutely over the moon as its a real step forward.
She had huge cuddles and affirmations from us when she got home and of course marbles for her marble jar ( which is now almost full).
A general theme regarding educating and bringing up dyslexic and dyspraxic children is the need for repetition in everything. I am seeing that this repetition, though frustrating sometimes for me, can and does pay off.
Onwards and forwards … More social skills to tackle….. next up table manners during big social and family occasions.
Till next time.
